Animal Hauntings

Humans have long been fascinated with and reliant on non-human animals – for food, transport, clothing and as pets. We are haunted by past connections to animals and many of the objects within the collection reflect this. With more than 35,500 species currently threatened with extinction, this exhibition uses objects and moving image to highlight the entangled relationships between animals and humans, and offers new ways of looking with animals, not just at them – a snapshot into a ‘creaturely’ way of thinking.

Laughton’s Legacies

A display of paintings from the collection of the late Tom Laughton, Scarborough hotelier and brother of the Hollywood movie star Charles Laughton. Tom Laughton, who died in 1984, donated a large number of works to Scarborough Art Gallery in three stages – gifts dedicated to each of his three wives, who have remained largely invisible in the collection. The twelve artworks on display include some rarely seen works on paper by French artist and sculptor, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, and Edward Bawden. Alongside these are portraits of Laughton’s three wives, including a pastel drawing of Isobel as a child by Leeds-born artist, Philip Naviasky.

Scarborough: Our Seaside Town

The Scarborough Museums Trust team invites you to join them in celebrating this legendary seaside town. Scarborough: Our Seaside Town is a heartfelt exhibition, presenting collection favourites, through the reminiscences of the museum’s staff. Explore seaside objects, paintings, photographs and postcards, through the eyes of the Scarborough Museums Trust team, and share your own stories about living in or visiting Scarborough.

A rare opportunity to see Scarborough’s seaside heritage all in one place, with some of the town’s most prized and fondly-remembered artefacts, including an original Di Placido’s ice cream cart from the 1940s/50s which used to operate on Scarborough’s South Bay beach and the town’s original ‘Pancake Bell’, rung to signal the start of the unique tradition of skipping on the seafront on Shrove Tuesday.

Share your seaside memories across our social media platforms using #OurSeasideTown.
