The Exhibition: Set in the historical city of Sis, the capital of the Cilician Kingdom from 1226-1375, this immersive exhibition invites visitors to explore the intersection of cultures, trades, and politics along the Silk Road. Cilicia, strategically located near the southeast coast of modern-day Turkey, was a melting pot of civilisations caught between the tides of invasions and power struggles.
Kingdom of Cilicia: Under the reign of King Levon I from 1198, Cilicia emerged as a united and formidable kingdom. The exhibition showcases how Cilicia, with its fortress town of Sis, thrived by leveraging its geographical advantage along the Silk Road and forging strategic alliances, surviving amid larger, more ambitious neighbours.
Cultural Heritage: Despite the challenges, Cilicia's conversion to Christianity in the fourth century fostered a unique artistic identity. The exhibition proudly displays the surviving treasures of this era, emphasising the resilience of Cilician culture, even as the kingdom eventually fell in 1375.
